If you think of yoga as “Ice Cream” you soon discover there are many flavors – some more agreeable to your palate than others. Most yoga practiced in the United States is referred to as “Hatha Yoga”, the limb of the yoga tree focusing on the “asanas” or physical poses. Yet yoga has limbs for breathing (Pranayama), concentration (Dharana), meditation ( Dhyana), as well as guidelines for living a happier and more balanced life (Yamas & Niyamas). Here are Every Body Happy Yoga's “flavors”:
New Beginnings Yoga – Suitable for students new to yoga or returning to yoga after time away from practice. Also appropriate for students needing more adaptation of postures using props. Pace is slower than Multi-Level class with shorter holding times for the asanas. Basic breath awareness is taught, practiced and encouraged.
Multi-level class - Suitable for experienced students as well as newer students who are moving towards a more diversified practice. Students are encouraged to develop a deeper sense of self-observation (Svadhyaya) and concentration (Dharana) by focusing on their breathing while moving into, sustaining, and exiting asanas. Students will practice inverted poses (Headstand, Shouderstand, etc.) with or without adaptations. Postures will have longer holding times than in the New Beginnings class. Pace is moderate. More and varied pranayama (breathing techniques) will be shared as well as chanting and toning (Nada Yoga).
